An extremely easy to use digital camcorder, it uses an LCD screen instead of an old-fashioned eyepiece and a huge red button that you click to start and stop recording. You can charge it via USB with the rechargeable battery pack that comes with the camcorder, but you can also use three lithium AAA batteries if you don’t have access to a computer or outlet to charge up. You can also connect your device to your HDTV with an HDMI micro cable, which is supposed to be on the market shortly. Of course you can also upload all of your videos to your PC or Mac.

Pros: with the Flip UltraHD the image stabilizer works impressively well, which is important when handling camcorders as small as these. At this size, any hand movement results in a ‘shaky cam’ effect. the 60fps imports easily into Final Cut Pro without compression, unlike with previous generations of the Flip. The high fps rate is great for outdoor shooting, making this a generally great camera to take on a vacation. The Flip Port and accessories available are a real plus as well. The camera allows for a wider shooting angle and it has the best microphone of all Flip generations.

 The Flip UltraHD Video Camera’s size is not just great for toting around on vacations either, parents with small children in the house will love how easy it is to carry around and catch spontaneous special moments in home videos. the editing software that comes with the camera is very easy to use for someone who just wants to clean up their videos and get on with their lives. Another great feature about the Flip UltraHD is that in a world of multifunctional gadgets, it is a dedicated camcorder and you do not have to navigate through several menus to start a recording.

Cons: The camcorder itself as well as the editing software that comes with it lacks a lot of options. In order to simplify the interface, they sacrificed features and functionality. When reviewing your video clips on the camera screen, it is not possible to fast forward or rewind to a specific frame within a clip. With so many point and shoot cameras and phones including video recording as a feature, the hobbyist or video enthusiast may want a camcorder with more features than extreme ease of use.

 It lacks exposure control and has no focus feature. Even the iPhone camcorder includes the ability to focus. You will need to keep your backup battery source handy, even though you can record for two hours in internal memory, the power runs out in about 45 minutes. The frame rate is also a problem. 60fps is your only option, which makes low light situations grainy. The price is hard to justify when there are so many other gadgets at this price range that also record video.

The run-down of this product is that it’s a great niche camcorder, but not powerful enough for any serious use. It is incredibly easy to use, has good accessories and is small, slim and lightweight. Vacationers and young families will love adding the Flip to their gadget collection, but those are probably the only people who will. The high fps rate is not dim light friendly and lacks any exposure control. You won’t be able to focus on any particular object, unlike in many other gadgets with several built-in uses. It is however one of the lightest dedicated camcorders of its size and it is a big relief to just be able to hit record instead of having to navigate through shortcuts and programs on a phone or point and shoot camera to capture something on video.

 Choosing to bring the Flip UltraHD into your life will ultimately depend on your particular preference for either simplicity (one item, one function) or a multifunctional item (smart phones, point and shoots, SLRs, etc).
